March 4, 2010

GREENVILLE, SC – March 4, 2010 – Kierre Whitty, a student in Greenville Technical College’s Aircraft Maintenance Technology program, has received the Horizon Air Technical Training Scholarship awarded by the Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance (AWAM).

AWAM is a nonprofit organization formed for the purpose of championing women’s professional growth and enrichment in the aviation maintenance fields by providing opportunities for sharing information and networking, education, fostering a sense of community and increasing public awareness of women in the industry.

Recipients of the Horizon Air scholarship may choose from any of the professional courses offered by the regional airline in Oregon. These courses cover improved maintenance activities, important safety issues, and other standard operating procedures.

Whitty, one of three female students in Greenville Tech’s Aircraft Maintenance Technology program, says women often don’t know about the field and may not realize that this career is a strong one even in today’s economy. “We make up such a small portion of the field,” she says. “I hope that more women will realize that the job outlook is excellent and the work is interesting.”
