Airport District plans for livability and growth
September 7, 2023Pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, traffic safety improvements, Swamp Rabbit Trail connections, an airport loop trail, a skate park and a runway viewing platform – the City has received an ambitious list of recommendations from the draft Airport District Planning Study.
“We learned a lot from the community through the public engagement process,” City Manager Shannon Lavrin said. “We’re excited about the opportunities ahead.”
The full report on the area that includes the Downtown Municipal Airport and the Greenville Convention Center is now available for public review and comment. Planning Commission will hold a public hearing and make a recommendation at its October meeting before consideration by City Council.
Completed in under a year, the plan is the result of a collaborative process with residents, stakeholders, consultants and City staff. Led by the City of Greenville in close partnership with the Greenville Airport Commission, the Arcadis consultant team received public input and facilitated a project steering committee to inform and guide the project.
The plan communicates a vision to connect the area’s assets through an outdoor-focused experience, recommending new recreation amenities and changes to the major roadways that surround the airport district.
