American Heart Association to celebrate million-dollar Lowcountry Heart Walk

February 18, 2020

The American Heart Association will host the first-ever million-dollar Heart Walk in South Carolina right here in Charleston! The Lowcountry Heart Walk takes place on Saturday, February 29th at Brittlebank Park in Downtown Charleston at 8 A.M. 5,000 supporters and survivors from across the state are expected to attend and raise funds to support cardiovascular research and education.

The Lowcountry Heart Walk raises awareness that walking 30 minutes a day greatly reduces your risk of heart disease and stroke, which are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers in the United States. More than one in three adults in South Carolina have some form of cardiovascular disease. That’s enough people to fill Williams-Brice or Memorial Stadium 10 times.

The Lowcountry Heart Walk is a culmination of the year’s work for company and community teams in the area and wouldn’t be possible without local Life is Why sponsors MUSC Health and the InterTech Group. The day includes fun and interactive activities, a heart obstacle course for the kids, a survivor area, health screenings, and CPR demonstrations.

2020 Lowcountry Heart Walk Chair Jim Newsome, President and CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority, is passionate about the AHA’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.

“I’m proud to serve as Chair for the Lowcountry Heart Walk as we urge the entire community to join the AHA’s efforts to build a healthier Lowcountry. We encourage everyone to be part of this momentous, million-dollar event,” says Newsome.
