February 20, 2025

Clinton native and longtime coach Andy Young has been named to the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association (SCACA) 2025 Hall of Fame, recognizing his lasting impact on high school athletics in South Carolina.

Young, a Clinton High School graduate, attended Erskine College on a tennis scholarship before returning to his hometown to begin his teaching and coaching career in Laurens County School District 56. In 1973, he took over as Athletic Director and head football coach at Clinton High School, succeeding Keith Richardson.

During his tenure, Young led the Red Devils to multiple state championship appearances, including a title victory in 2009, marking the school’s eighth state championship. His leadership extended beyond the football field, playing a key role in fostering unity within the school community, particularly during the integration of Clinton High School and Bell Street High School in 1970.

The SCACA Hall of Fame, established in 1993, honors coaches who have made significant contributions to high school athletics in South Carolina. Inductees must have a minimum of 20 years of SCACA membership and demonstrate integrity, leadership, and excellence in coaching. Young’s selection for the 2025 Hall of Fame class reflects his dedication to student-athletes and the greater Clinton community.

In 2023, Clinton High School celebrated the 100th anniversary of its football program, recognizing past and present players and coaches, with Young’s contributions highlighted as a defining part of the school’s athletic history.

Young’s induction into the SCACA Hall of Fame is a testament to his commitment to athletics, his students, and the values of discipline and teamwork. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of coaches and student-athletes.
