“Artists Teaching: Teaching Artists,” exhibitions highlight the work of artists and educators
September 4, 2024The Department of Art Faculty Exhibition, “Artists Teaching: Teaching Artists,” showcases the artwork of Clemson University’s artist-educators, symbolically connecting faculty research and experiences that explore elements of place, media, technology, and visual language. The event in the Lee Gallery will feature a two-part exhibition from August 26 – October 3 and October 16 – December 5.
Art Department Chair and Professor Valerie Zimany highlights the exhibition’s significance through its award-winning faculty.
“This two-part exhibition is a testament to the dynamic interplay between teaching and creative practice,” Zimany said. “It demonstrates how our faculty members integrate their art and design research into their educational roles, enriching both their work and the student experience.”
Hosted at the Lee Gallery on Clemson’s main campus, this exhibition underscores the faculty’s commitment to experiential teaching for undergraduate and graduate students and presents an occasion to share their current creative research with students, colleagues, and the broader community. The works reflect a wide range of perspectives and embody diverse communication, visual, and material practices, as well as engagement in meaningful dialogue on contemporary artmaking in the 21st century.
Clemson University’s status as research university provides faculty with unique opportunities to experiment with new and emerging technologies and foster interdisciplinary collaborations, generating thoughtful discourse in response to the viewpoints and challenges of the present day. This exhibition exemplifies the department’s role in guiding the next generation of Clemson artists and designers and build cultural capital on Clemson’s campus and the region. The community is invited to engage with the active practice of the art and design faculty through the exhibition and related events.
Participating faculty artists include Jon Bolton, Kiley Brandt, Zen Cohen, John Cummings, David Donar, Mandy Ferguson, David Gerhard, Joey Manson, Todd McDonald, Amanda Musick, Alex Schechter, Drew Sisk, Brooks Harris Stevens, Kathleen Thum, Denise Woodward-Detrich, Anderson Wrangle, and Valerie Zimany.
Part I and Part II of “Artists Teaching: Teaching Artists” will be open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The accompanying artists talks, and all events are free and open to the public.
