Askew to address new law school graduates May 12

CHARLESTON, SC – April 13, 2012 – The nation’s top official for evaluating law schools will serve May 12 as commencement speaker for the Charleston School of Law.

Hulett H. “Bucky” Askew, who is the consultant on legal education to the American Bar Association in Washington, is the organization’s senior manager and top administrator of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, the official accreditation agency for law schools in the United States.

Askew will receive an honorary degree during commencement, as will Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr., the school announced today.

“We are highly honored to have Bucky Askew speak to our students during our sixth May commencement ceremony,” said Alex Sanders, chairman of the Charleston School of Law Board of Directors.  “He is a law professional’s professional — a man with a powerful background who understands the importance of ensuring law schools like ours are committed to the highest possible standards to make our justice system accessible to all.”

The Charleston School of Law, which received full accreditation in 2011, will hold its sixth spring graduation ceremony 2 p.m. May 12 at McAlister Field House at The Citadel.


About Bucky Askew

Askew is a Georgia native with a distinguished history of working with legal service and professional organizations.  Prior to accepting his current position in 1996, Askew served as director of the Office of Bar Admissions of the Supreme Court of Georgia (1990-2006) and also as executive director of the Chief Justice of Georgia’s Commission on Professionalism from 1990-96.  From 1983 to 1990, he was director of the civil division of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Askew to serve on the board of the Legal Services Corporation on which he served until 2003.  A member of several legal professional committees at the ABA, Askew received a bachelor’s degree in 1964 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a law degree from Emory University School of Law in 1967.  He lives in the Washington, D.C., area.
