Associated Charities honors Jean Rowland’s memory with gift to the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County

Associated Charities of Kershaw County recently made a donation of $5,000 to the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) in memory of Jean Rowland to continue its School Arts and Outreach Programs. Jean Rowland, a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, educator, and supporter of the arts, was a long time member of the Board of Associated Charities. She was also a patron of the arts and made it possible for many students to attend performances at the Fine Arts Center.
“We are very grateful for this gift from Associated Charities in Jean Rowland’s memory”, said FAC Board President Linda Shaylor. “Mrs. Rowland was an exceptional lady and will be missed by this community.”
Associated Charities of Kershaw County was formed when the Mayfield Children’s Home was closed and the house sold. The advisory board which consisted of community leaders invested the money from the house sale. Over time that investment has grown, and each year the charity uses the interest from that investment to help children in Kershaw County, according to Carolyn Willens, Chairman of the Board, from individual needs or emergencies to funding programs for groups such as Boys and Girls Club, The Fine Arts Center, The Family Resource Center, The Mentoring Program sponsored by United Way, and summer programs for children.
The FAC is a local, non-profit organization whose mission is to create an environment that promotes artistic and cultural experiences and provides superior educational, instructional and entertainment opportunities that elevate and enrich the community for all residents of Kershaw County and beyond.
The FAC, founded in 1974, intentionally established the tradition of outreach to the under-served and the at-risk child. Scholarships are available in all arts areas, and no deserving child is ever turned away from FAC programs for financial reasons. The FAC offers classes, opportunities to be on stage and school arts and outreach programs that reach all of our schools as well as HeadStart and First Steps students. The School Arts and Outreach programs provide artists-in–residence in all schools as well as arts performances both at the Fine Arts Center Wood Auditorium and in the schools. Last year over 5,500 students were served with the residencies and performances.

The Fine Arts Center is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that is funded in part by the Frederick S. Upton Foundation and the South Carolina Arts Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding provided by the City of Camden, Kershaw County, and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina along with donations from businesses and individuals.
