AT&T expands access to high speed internet in Richland County

December 12, 2017

AT&T* Fixed Wireless Internet(1) for rural and underserved locations needing home internet is now available to residents and small businesses in parts of Richland County, including Eastover, Gadsden and Hopkins.

This follows the launch of Fixed Wireless Internet in parts of South Carolina in June as part of AT&T’s FCC Connect America Fund commitment. The company plans to provide access to over 1.1 million locations by 2020. In South Carolina alone, AT&T has committed to providing access to 30,000 locations by 2020, reaching more than 40 percent of that goal by the end of this year.

“While we often talk about education as the key to a positive and productive future for anyone, we sometimes overlook the fact that access to information and opportunities is essential to grabbing that key,” said state Rep. Jimmy Bales, “Broadband technology expands education beyond classroom walls and helps equalize differences between urban and rural areas.  This is a good day for rural residents in southeastern Richland County.”

AT&T’s Fixed Wireless Internet service delivers a home internet connection with download speeds of at least 10Mbps and upload speeds of at least 1Mbps. The connection comes from a wireless tower to a fixed antenna on customers’ homes or businesses. This is an efficient way to deliver high-quality, high-speed internet to customers living in underserved rural areas.

“With this innovative service, we are working to close the connectivity gap in South Carolina,” said Ted Creech, director of external affairs for AT&T South Carolina. “Access to fast and reliable internet is a game changer in today’s world. This service will bring additional opportunities for more customers in more parts of our state.”

In addition to South Carolina, the service is available to residents and businesses in parts of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.
