Attorney General Alan Wilson Issues Consumer Alert: South Carolinians Urged to Delete 23andMe Accounts to Protect Personal Data

March 26, 2025

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson is urging residents to consider deleting their 23andMe accounts following the genetic testing company’s recent bankruptcy filing. Citing concerns over the potential sale or transfer of sensitive personal information, Wilson issued a consumer alert encouraging users to take proactive steps to safeguard their data.

“This company has sensitive information about the people who have used it,” said Attorney General Wilson. “We don’t know what will happen to the company as part of any potential bankruptcy proceedings, but that personal data could be an asset that gets transferred or sold. The best way to protect your personal information is to delete your account.”

23andMe, known for its DNA testing services that provide insights into ancestry and health traits, stores extensive personal and genetic data on its users. With the company entering bankruptcy proceedings, there is heightened concern that this sensitive information could be treated as a corporate asset and potentially fall into the hands of third parties.

South Carolinians who have used 23andMe’s services and wish to delete their accounts can do so by submitting a request through the company’s customer care page: Requesting 23andMe Account Closure – 23andMe Customer Care.

Consumers are encouraged to act promptly to minimize any potential risk and to stay informed about further developments regarding the company’s bankruptcy case.
