Attorney General Alan Wilson Responds to False Threats at South Carolina Schools and Universities
August 25, 2025South Carolina Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Alan Wilson issued the following statement in response to recent false alarms and hoaxes impacting schools and college campuses across the state:
“As a dad of two teenagers, I understand the fear and uncertainty when false alarms, hoaxes, or swatting incidents hit our college campuses or K-12 schools. These dangerous acts cause real trauma and divert vital law enforcement resources from protecting the public.
While the report of an active shooter is a real concern that should be taken seriously, it’s equally important to recognize there’s been a nationwide trend of false threats designed to spread panic. We stand with law enforcement in investigating and holding those responsible fully accountable. Last night, I was immediately on the phone with law enforcement, university officials, and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.
To parents, students, and everyone in our community: your fears are valid. Until proven safe, we must take every threat seriously. We also need to work together to stop these reckless hoaxes that endanger our schools and communities, while following law enforcement’s updates to prevent the spread of misinformation and more panic.
Law enforcement will continue to prioritize safety, backing every effort to keep South Carolina both vigilant and secure. When I’m Governor, I’ll strengthen our laws against anyone who orchestrates these false alarms and they’ll be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
