Axe Craft Depot Coming to Clinton
January 23, 2022The art of axe throwing began to gain popularity in 2006 as a backyard sport and expanded into something much bigger including competitive league play.
So just what is ax throwing?
Well, just what it sounds like. Individuals throw an axe at a target with the goal of hitting a bullseye as near as possible. The closer to the bullseye, the more points scored.
If that sounds like fun, you’re in luck. The newest sports craze is coming to Clinton. Owners Jered and Melissa Meadors are excited to bring something new and fun to town. They’ve had some exposure to axe throwing over the past few years, but it was after attending a friend’s baby shower last Spring that they started talking about how fun it would be to have a place in Clinton.
It went from a knock around idea to under construction.
The Axe Craft Depot is located at 223 W. Main Street in Clinton, and they hope to open by the end of February. The Meadors are doing much of the work themselves, truly a labor of love.
“We want to create a fun place to go do something non-Netflix,” said Jered Meadors. “Axe throwing is fun and takes some level of technique, but anyone can do it.”
The layout of the Axe Craft Depot lends itself to being a place to “go throw” and then hang out a while. They will also host private events (birthday parties, showers, family events) and community events.
The Axe Craft Depot will have 6 lanes and 2 of them will be league play certified. All lanes will be open to the public when they are open. People can call and schedule a time or use website to do that and walk-ins always welcome. Reserving a lane is for a one-hour time slot and the cost is $20 per person. The review of safety rules, technique and coaching is completed before the hour starts. The Depot will also have coaches observing and available to assist as needed during a session. If interest grows, they will look at creating some tournaments and league play.
They will have light refreshments available for purchase and will be bringing in food trucks to vary the options. Craft beer will also be on tap in the near future.
So who is eligible to throw?
Adults and youth age 8 and above will be able to participate. Children will need to have parental or adult supervision with a signed release form. Foam axes and targets will also be set up so even the really young kids can have fun.
Once they open, the Axe Craft Depot hours will be Thursday – Sunday 4 pm to 10 pm.
The space is still a work in process but is coming along nicely. It has the potential to be a “Cheers” kind of place, where everyone knows your name. A place for locals to stop by and relax for a bit.
