Aziz Ansari, GSSM Class of 2000, wins Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

Comedian Aziz Ansari, graduate of the South Carolina Governor’s School of Science & Mathematics’ (GSSM) class of 2000, was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for his original series “Master of None.” He co-wrote the episode “Parents,” with the show’s co-creator Alan Yang.

Born in Columbia and raised in Bennettsville, Ansari graduated from GSSM in 2000. During his time at the School, he was involved in a variety of endeavors, including the tennis team. Prior to being accepted to GSSM, he attended Marlboro Academy in Bennettsville. Following graduation, Ansari attended New York University, where he earned his marketing degree in 2004. Ansari then shifted his career to become a comedian and actor. He landed the role of Tom Haverford on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation.” In 2015, he produced and starred in his very own Netflix original series “Master of None.” Ansari first came to audiences’ attention when he co-created and starred on MTV’s hit sketch comedy series, “Human Giant.” An accomplished stand-up comedian, Ansari was named “The Funniest Man Under 30” by Rolling Stone in 2011.

Recently, Ansari wrote Modern Romance, for which he teamed up with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg and designed a massive research project that helped him combine his irreverent humor with cutting-edge social science to give readers a glimpse into the world of romance.
