BASF ECMS in Seneca sponsors 30th Annual Clemson Military Appreciation Day, awards $2,500 scholarship to Marine Corps veteran

November 14, 2023

The BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) site in Seneca, South Carolina, sponsored Clemson University’s 30th Annual Military Appreciation Day on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11. BASF ECMS also awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Marine Corps combat veteran and Clemson University senior Kasey Smith.

This is the third year in a row that BASF ECMS in Seneca has sponsored Clemson’s Military Appreciation Day and the third time BASF has awarded a veteran scholarship or money to a local organization that supports those who have served in the military, demonstrating the site’s commitment to recognizing and supporting Upstate area veterans.

Smith was recognized on the field before the game for his service in the Marine Corps. He worked as an Aviation Electronics Technician, maintaining and repairing helicopter electronics for essential missions. Smith was deployed to Afghanistan from July 2010 to February 2011. He is now a senior at Clemson, studying electrical engineering. After graduation, Smith plans to pursue a career in low-voltage electrical engineering designing circuits, production lines or avionics.

“While in the Marine Corps, I learned to stand up to the challenge of everything and to take the reins and get things done,” Smith said, skills that he is now applying to his education. “This scholarship goes a long way for me, especially with a wife and three-year-old daughter at home. Every bit of financial support is helpful.”

The BASF ECMS Seneca VETS Team was also recognized for their service to veterans in the community. They have volunteered more than 600 hours in the Upstate area in 2023 alone – many of them in partnership with Purple Heart Homes’ Golden Corner Chapter to build ramps and other needed items so that veterans can safely and comfortably age in place.

Additionally, Clemson University graduates who were POW or MIA were recognized during halftime through the Missing Man Table Ceremony. Clemson won its 16th straight Military Appreciation Day game, this year against Georgia Tech. Military Appreciation Day has been celebrated at Clemson every year since 1994.

BASF ECMS in Seneca is hiring production technicians and production technician apprentices. To learn more about job openings at BASF ECMS in Seneca, visit www.basf.com/seneca.
