BASF ECMS welcomes Clemson University’s inaugural STEM Start Program cohort for day of learning

August 6, 2024

Twenty-seven first-generation STEM students and two program sponsors from Clemson University, participating in the innovative STEM Start Program, now have a better understanding of precious metals recycling thanks to BASF Environmental Catalysts and Metal Solutions (ECMS). This initiative is designed to provide first-generation college students with the tools, experiences, and support necessary to excel in their STEM education and future careers.

During their visit on July 29, students toured BASF ECMS’s major production departments and participated in two STEM-based team-building activities alongside site leadership. This hands-on experience gave students a firsthand look at how a leading company in catalysis and precious metals operates, and the diverse career opportunities available in the STEM fields.

“We are thrilled to welcome Clemson University’s STEM Start participants to our Seneca site,” said Elba Lizardi, Site Director at BASF ECMS Seneca Site. “This program is an incredible opportunity for first-generation STEM students to gain real-world insights and connect with professionals in the field. We believe in fostering the next generation of STEM leaders and are committed to supporting their journey.”

STEM Start is an exciting new initiative developed by Clemson University to support first-generation college students in successfully transitioning into their college experience and pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields.

“College is a time of change and challenges,” explained Dr. Chris Confer, Director of Academic Transitions and Engagement, Division of the Academic Success Center at Clemson University. “First-generation students often face unique hurdles, and STEM Start provides them with a strong support system and foundational skills to help them thrive academically and professionally. By partnering with leading companies like BASF ECMS, we’re able to give students a glimpse of the future and inspire them to reach their full potential.”

STEM Start is open to all admitted Summer Start and Fall Start students from South Carolina who are first-generation college students majoring in STEM fields. Participants commit to an immersive summer experience that includes educational programs, hands-on learning, and visits to various companies and organizations showcasing STEM careers.

In addition to BASF ECMS, participants will tour several other notable businesses, including:

  • BMW
  • Arthrex
  • Prisma Health
  • Department of Natural Resources
  • The Center for Human Genetics
  • ORTEC
  • Hartness

These tours aim to help students start their academic journeys with a clear vision of their future career goals and the potential paths available to them.
