Basic White Sneakers – The Lasting “Must Have Shoe”
February 19, 2016By Brian Maynor
Remember growing up when the worst thing in the world was a new pair of white shoes? Well times have definitely changed.
Over the past year solid, bright white sneakers have been popping up all over the fashion scene and are sticking around this year. Due in part to the Adidas and the relaunch of their iconic Stan Smiths, if you don’t have a pair you need to find one ASAP. Fortunately there are tons of styles and ways to wear them that may surprise you.
Here are a few of the most popular reasons to snag a pair for yourself:
1. Surprisingly versatile. Sneakers use to be worn as commuter shoes for people in big cities, but now they are an all-day style staple. In fact, basic white sneakers may be one of the most versatile pair of shoes on the market. If you want to instantly dress down your look without making it completely casual simply throw these on and go. Try them with everything from classic jeans and t-shirts to sundresses; dress pants and even suits. Posh Spice herself Victoria Beckham even wore a pair during her most recent runway presentation at NYFW.
2. Plenty of styles to choose from. Not only are there a plethora of materials on the market from leather, cotton and canvas to suede, the styles are endless too. Low-top, high-top, slip-ons, low-profile or platform you are sure to be able to find a pair that works into your shoe closet easily and guarantees lots of wear.
3. Keep them clean. This is probably the hardest part of the trend, because in order to make it work, the shoes have to stay stark white, which means investing in cleaning and caring for them. Unlike your tendency as a child to immediately play in the dirt and scuff up a new pair of shoes, you want to avoid the broken-in look with white sneakers. Part of the appeal is the brightness and cleanliness they give your overall look. So keep that in mind as you’re deciding which fabric works best for your lifestyle and don’t forget to invest in a couple pairs of extra laces.
4. A little color is ok. If you’re not feeling the solid white that’s ok and not a deal breaker for enjoying this trend. Simple pops of color like stripes, loops or sole detailing are great ways to inject some personality and individualism to the trend. You can also look for layers of textures and seaming details to break up the shoe and give it more impact and variation.
Nothing is more true than the adage, that what’s old becomes new again. While we may have despised a new, clean pair of sneakers as a child, as an adult, we are craving them as a stylish necessity.
