March 29, 2016

MONCKS CORNER, SC – Three Berkeley County Adult Education employees received recognition and awards for their work in adult education during the Adult Education Spring Institute in Columbia.

Cathy Rutledge, Administrative Assistant and Bookkeeper for the Berkeley County Adult Education Director, was named the state 2015-2016 Paraprofessional/Administrative Assistant of the Year. Rutledge received a plaque and $500 award. She also was named the Region 3, 2015-2016 Paraprofessional/Administrative Assistant of the Year along with a $100 award. Region 3 includes 11 adult education programs.

“It is indeed an honor to be recognized as the 2015-2016 Paraprofessional/Administrative Assistant of the Year for Region 3 by the South Carolina Association of Adult and Community Education for my commitment and dedication to the success of the Berkeley County Adult Education program. Awards are earned with the teamwork of great co-workers and family members,” said Cathy Rutledge, administrative assistant for the Director of Adult and Community Education.

Adult Education teachers, Anne Davis and Ivonne Vaughn, were inducted into the Teacher Hall of Fame for their 10 years of service individually and their dedication to teaching adult education.

Anne Davis said, “Working with adults is great! These students want and, in most cases, need their GED to move on to the next phase of their lives, so they take responsibility for their learning. That is a huge component in this equation! Adult students have a greater appreciation for the classroom experience and for their instructors. It is an honor to work with my students every day and assist them in reaching their educational goals.”

“Teaching people from all over the world has been a great experience. I have so many beautiful memories of many of my students. I know they need to be able to understand, speak, read and write to survive in this country, so I try extra hard to make sure they learn. I love my students, and they sense that,” said Ivonne Vaugh.
