Be more productive – Do you let small stuff eat you alive?

May 31, 2016

By Jerry Bellune

It’s the small stuff that saps our time and energy.
We put off resolving little issues that nag at us.
Minor complaints nag at us for days.
An example: Dispute a charge or a wrong delivery.
This interferes with our ability to be productive.
Go ahead and resolve them. You’ll feel better.

Make a plan to deal with unresolved problems.
This frees you to be more creative and innovative.
You will be more resourceful with big problems.
You’ll be open to realize new opportunities.
Decide a specific time to make a complaint call.
That will quiet your nagging feelings.
It will free you intellectually and emotionally.

Are you are a writer or a blogger?
Some days it’s hard to get started, isn’t it?
Go ahead and write a lousy first draft.
Don’t worry about it. Just get it written.
Then take a break. Get a cup of coffee. Relax.
Come back to it and polish it up. Make it great.

Condition yourself to work in specific places.
Work where you associate with work.
Your office, the library or some distraction-free place. Don’t work where you play and relax.
Your surroundings set the stage for your attention.
This helps you focus on the project at hand.

Resist temptations to go on the internet.
Don’t dip in and out of social media and e-mail.
Set aside time in your daily plan for them.
Leave more time for your more important projects.

Set small blocks of time for intense work.
It’s amazing how much they can drain your energy.
Break big projects into pieces with specific times.
Start with half the time you need.
Assign an hour’s task to 30 minutes.
You’ll find you get it done faster . . . or you don’t.
That’s OK. Take another 30 to finish if needed.
