Being a power-couple takes planning

Merging two successful careers can be a challenge, unless you have a plan.

Let’s be honest, it’s easier to build a career when we’re single.  When we only have ourselves to answer to, we can log the long hours, sacrifice personal time and have a singular focus practically guilt free.  However, all that changes the second we start sharing our lives with someone else.

What does this new reality look like, especially if the other person is also committed to building their career?

The glamour and allure of being a power-couple is sexy, but if we want both a successful and fulfilling career and personal life we need a plan.

Here are some ideas on how to build a power-couple that really works:

1.   Change your mindset.  When any two powers come together it is a joining of forces, but instead of viewing the relationship as the sum of two, it helps to see it as the power of two.  We’re no longer alone.  Aside from a cheerleader, coach and confidant we now have a new asset.  Having a second income not only divides the financial burden, it also gives us the flexibility to branch out and shoot for our dreams.

2.    Focus on the endgame.  We all have a lot going on, and that can trap us in a series of short-term trade-offs and compromises.  Power-couples take a step back and form their ultimate goals together, so they have a better understanding of how to tackle their present circumstances.  Just like any decision-making dilemma, if we don’t know where we’re going it takes a lot longer to get there.

3.    Be flexible.  Having it all takes a lot of flexibility, both at work and at home.  It’s common to focus on how to blend career trajectories, but we also need to spend time laying out the type of family we want.  Whether it’s a single career, lead career, alternators or complements there are plenty of options to consider.  Keep in mind these decisions don’t have to be permanent either.  With careers spanning 50 years or more there, they will go through several phases and they could all look very different.

It is possible to have it all:  two successful careers, a fulfilling relationship and a family, you just have to plan for it.  The secret is creating the vision and the plan together so everyone is on the same page and working toward the same goals.
