BE&K/Turner Hosts Special Appreciation Event for Tradeworkers at Boeing Construction Site on March 24

NORTH CARLESTON, SC – March 24, 2011 – BE&K/Turner, design-builder for the Boeing South Carolina 787 Expansion, announced today that it has achieved a major safety milestone — 3 million labor-hours worked without a lost-time incident. To mark the occasion, BE&K/Turner hosted a tradeworker appreciation luncheon. After a brief ceremony, the crowd enjoyed a buffet lunch complete with a raffle and giveaways.

“Three-million safe labor-hours is an amazing achievement of which we are extremely proud,” said Mike Pace, BE&K/Turner’s project director. “To put this into perspective, the total labor-hours worked on a typical industrial construction project rarely reaches into the hundreds of thousands, let alone the millions. And to work this many hours safely, our subcontractors deserve a lot of credit.”  Pace went on to say, “The most important takeaway is that the workers on site have been able to maintain their employment without losing time due to injury. Their well-being remains our highest priority.”

Speaking to the project status, Pace noted, Construction is on schedule. Boeing will have the ability to start production of the 787 aircraft this summer.”

Last week, BE&K/Turner was recognized for its outstanding safety record at the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Safety Awards luncheon. That same day (March 16), BE&K/Turner formally celebrated reaching the highest point of the Boeing South Carolina 787 delivery center last week. The delivery center, where the finished Boeing 787 airplane will be delivered to its new owner, is a stand-alone facility under construction next to the final assembly building. The delivery center is sited in the northeast corner of the site alongside South Aviation Boulevard.

Earlier this year, BE&K/Turner announced that it has received a 2010 Boeing Performance Excellence Award. The Boeing Company issues the award annually to recognize suppliers who have achieved superior performance. In addition, BE&K/Turner was named 2010 General Contractor of the Year by the Charleston Chapter of the American Subcontractors Association of the Carolinas.

BE&K/Turner’s design partner on the Boeing South Carolina 787 Expansion project is BRPH Architects-Engineers, Inc. The BE&K/Turner/BRPH design-build team is headquartered at the Building Group’s regional office in Greenville, SC.
