Benjamin Franklin Experience opens early enrollment; only 60 students will be accepted this summer
January 31, 2018
Benjamin Franklin Experience (BFE) is a life-changing summer program for teens ages 14-18. Students have day-in-the-life experiences in 10 inspirational careers, led by experts. Fields include STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), arts, journalism, law, medicine, and more. One day students work with an environmental scientist in a mountain stream; the next, they cut a music track for a TV show. Two-week courses run from June to early August.
2017 was the program’s inaugural year. Organizations that created experiences for students included: GE, Greenville HealthCare, The Greenville News, Furman University, Thrive Upstate, Greenbrier Farms, Beck Digital, and composer-for-television, Cale Pellick.
“My daughter’s behavior changed dramatically after she attended the program,” explains Tonia Jeray, parent of a 2017 BFE graduate. “Her grades improved, she came out of her shell and blossomed socially. She found a new sense of purpose. My daughter’s level of confidence increased greatly. I can’t recommend Benjamin Franklin Experience enough.”
The program has three key objectives: (1) expand teens’ view of the world, and introduce them to the many career options available to them; (2) instill the belief that they can attain their dream careers; and (3) provide ongoing support and resources to see that they achieve their career goals over the long term.
The application process has two parts: (1) Students must be nominated by a close adult—a teacher, coach, counselor, family friend, or family member; (2) students must complete the online application. Admissions are need-blind— BFE does not consider an applicant’s financial situation when deciding admission.
All highly-motivated teens are encouraged to apply in advance of the March 4th early enrollment deadline. Eligible applicants are accepted on a first-come-first served basis. Read our FAQ on application details, including eligibility requirements, tuition and financial assistance and advice on how to impress our Evaluation Committee.
