Berkeley County to host public engagement sessions on Greenbelt Program

Seeking input on protecting land and improving outdoor recreation

Berkeley County Government is hosting five public engagement sessions on its new Greenbelt Program. Community members will have the opportunity to share ideas on what land should be protected in Berkeley County and how to improve access to outdoor recreation.

Public meetings will take place 6-7:30 p.m. as follows:

• Wednesday, March 27: Timberland High School Auditorium, 1418 Gravel Hill Rd, St. Stephen
• Thursday. March 28: Philip Simmons High School Media Room, 3080 River Village Dr., Charleston
• Tuesday, April 9: Goose Creek High School Auditorium, 1137 Red Bank Rd., Goose Creek
• Wednesday, April 10: Cane Bay High School Media Room, 1624 State Rd., Summerville
• Thursday, April 18: Berkeley High School Auditorium, 406 W Main St., Moncks Corner

Berkeley County is working with several stakeholders on this initiative, including Trust Public Land, Lord Berkeley Conservation, Lowcountry Land Trust, Studio Main, and Tom O’Rourke Parks and Recreation.

In November 2022, Berkeley County residents voted, through a referendum, to continue the County’s One Cent Sales Tax Program another seven years. For the first time since the program’s inception in 2008, funding will also be used for Greenbelt Preservation projects. A majority of One Cent Sales Tax Program funds goes to help fund roadway, transportation, and infrastructure-related projects.

At its meeting on February 26, 2024, County Council voted to create the Berkeley County Conservation and Greenbelt Advisory Commission to provide recommendations on these projects. Learn more about the commission HERE.
