Best Ways to Work toward a New Career in the New Year

January 2, 2020

As we wave goodbye to 2019 and welcome in 2020, many people have thought of New Year’s resolutions to improve or reinvigorate their lives. If one of those goals includes a new career in the New Year, then Richland Library’s Business and Careers Department is here to help.

It doesn’t matter if you are just starting the job search or looking to switch into a new career field. Our career coaches want you to stay on track by utilizing their Career Process Model.

Discover Yourself: You are the CEO of yourself, so unearth your skills by asking questions, such as, “What are you passionate about, what sets you apart from others and what value do you bring to the employer?”

Define Yourself: Search for employers who match your skill set and align with your expertise. It’s important to keep in mind which employer is best for you, what your personal mission statement is, and how your skill set benefits or brings value to the employer.

Present Yourself: Figure out the best approach to market yourself. Determine how a cover letter and resume can best represent you, how to communicate your unique skill set, and how to make yourself stand out.

Promote Yourself: Use social media platforms, such as LinkedIn, to reach a wider base of employers. Identify how you are networking with potential employers who you want to work for.

Take a Deep Breath: Try not to fast-forward through the process. It’s vital to relax and spend some time brainstorming. Ask yourself, “Is this what I want?” If the answer is yes, then go after it.
