BHSA welcomes SC Legislators to Myrtle Beach for legislative panel at annual board seminar

Members of the SC House of Representatives and the SC Senate were present at the Behavioral Health Services Association of South Carolina (BHSA) Board Seminar held January 26-28, 2018 at the Embassy Suites at the Kingston Plantation, Myrtle Beach, SC.
BHSA hosted a legislative panel to discuss the current trends in SC politics as well as current issues relating to prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery of substance abuse related disorders. This includes the Opioid Crisis, currently being experienced by the citizens of SC. Additionally, we would like to thank the SC Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services Director Sara Goldsby for presenting on the “Opioid Epidemic in South Carolina; State Perspective and Response.”
Legislators in attendance include:
Representative Richie Yow, District 53 – Chesterfield and Lancaster Counties;
Senator Thomas C. Alexander, District 1 – Oconee and Pickens Counties;
Senator Ronnie W. Cromer, District 18 – Lexington, Newberry and Union Counties; and
Senator Kevin L. Johnson, District 36 – Clarendon, Darlington, Florence and Sumter Counties.
BHSA recognized Senator Thomas C. Alexander as the BHSA Legislator of the Year for the SC Senate. His award was presented at the BHSA Board Seminar on Saturday, January 27, 2018. Representative Murrell G. Smith was acknowledged as the BHSA Legislator of the Year for the SC House of Representatives.
The work being done by the substance use disorder treatment system in SC is very important to the health and well-being of the citizens of SC. BHSA recognized the legislators for their continued support and promotion of the substance use prevention, intervention and treatment services to ensure a healthy South Carolina.
BHSA is comprised of the 32 local alcohol and drug abuse commissions providing services in all 46 counties. These agencies were created by Act 301 of the 1973 code and provide services through the SC Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services.
The mission of BHSA is to support member agencies in the provision of quality behavioral health services that effectively meet the needs of the client and the community. The vision of BHSA is a healthier South Carolina where the negative consequences of substance use and addictions and other behavioral health problems no longer impact the client and community.
