Bitten by the business bug?
June 26, 2017By Jerry Bellune
Audrey Ellison’s career was shaped early in life.
She grew up in a family of entrepreneurs.
Her parents operated their own business.
They provide restoration, renovation and roofing services.
It’s a good business in a flooding-prone area.
It was natural that business would attract Audrey.
The bug bit her older brother James, too.
He had his own ideas of how to attract customers.
He set up a sports bar in the woods behind their home.
It was a place for the neighborhood boys to congregate.
He had lemonade and other drinks to serve his clientele.
The ingredients all came from Mom’s pantry.
His cost of doing business was absolute zero.
On every drink he sold his cash flow was 100%.
Inspired by this, Audrey opened her own business.
She planned to sell erasers at her own booth.
She set up her booth inside their home.
Her parents bought a little of her inventory.
But she had a problem that had no real solution.
How could she attract more business inside their home?
She needed a new business model.
That led to her own lemonade stand.
What is it about such businesses that attract us?
I believe it is more than just the money.
At 10 cents a glass, we aren’t going to make a killing.
My sister and I had the lemonade stand experience.
We also held a yard sale with our used comic books.
Home-made slingshots became one of my specialties.
As a pre-teen, I fibbed about my age to get a paper route.
I’m sorry suburbia killed the kids’ paper route business.
That was a great introduction to business and selling.
Audrey grew up and went on to college.
She majored in guess what? Business and marketing.
Today she handles marketing for her parents’ business.
I suspect Audrey one day will run the business.
Or she will find something else she’s passionate about.
If you have kids, encourage them to think about business.
It’s one of the best ways I know to make a living.
