Black ice, other hazardous conditions possible Sunday into Monday

January 18, 2026

While this weekend’s bout of wintry weather isn’t expected to bring any snow accumulation, residents and travelers should be on alert for hazardous travel conditions developing overnight into Monday morning. Black ice is possible due to overnight freezing temperatures combined with residual moisture from today’s precipitation. Additionally, there is a potential for freezing fog in some areas. The conditions may reduce visibility and create slick surfaces, particularly on bridges, overpasses, shaded roadways and less-traveled roads.

Safety Tips for Motorists:

  • Slow down and allow extra travel time, especially during the early morning hours.
  • Be cautious on bridges, overpasses and elevated roadways, which freeze first.
  • Increase following distance and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.
  • Use low-beam headlights in foggy conditions.
  • If you encounter icy conditions, reduce speed gradually and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.

Georgetown County Emergency Management will continue to monitor conditions and provide additional updates if the forecast changes.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware and use caution when traveling. Visit their Facebook page for more updates.
