BlueCross employees donate more than 32,000 meals to Harvest Hope

July 8, 2019

The summer months are hard for food banks because the need goes up but donations go down. BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina employees understand that need and have made an incredible contribution to Harvest Hope food bank.

Adding the pounds of food collected from all of the Midlands’ BlueCross locations, plus the virtual food drive, cash and checks, BlueCross employees created 32,094 meals for hungry families. The formula for the meals is for every dollar donated, Harvest Hope can make five meals. Since 2005, BlueCross employees have provided almost 500,000 meals to the organization.

This year employees were encouraged to donate items in support of Harvest Hope’s diabetic food pantry. The diabetic-friendly food boxes contain items that are low in sugar and salt, which are healthier options for people with diabetes. The boxes include fresh produce, lean proteins and canned items without added salt and sugar.

In addition, employees donated plastic bags and dozens of employees spent two days in June volunteering at the food pantry.

A couple fast facts to help build out the story.

  • Harvest Hope serves 38,000 people per week in 20 counties.
  • Since 2005, BlueCross employees have provided almost 500,000 meals.
  • Important to note that this is all employee donations.
