July 31, 2013Very few things make me happier than events. Dressing-up and incorporating a theme into outfits in unique and unexpected ways is one of the many fun parts of my job, but sometimes we have to balance the fun with function. Dressing to attend a work-related event presents a very unique set of expectations and opportunities.
One of the most common examples is when your company sponsors a charity fundraiser and receives a table and tickets as part of their sponsorship. The event is semi-formal with food and an open bar, but you are attending with your boss and peers. While everyone knows not to overindulge on food and cocktails most people struggle with how to look appropriate for the function and retain a sense of professionalism at the same time. Here are my tips on how to assemble the perfect ensemble for your next business function:
1. Set the tone, literally. Most people gravitate toward black when it comes to business functions because they feel it is a safe color. While that is true you severely limit yourself and your options by eliminating the entire color spectrum plus it’s boring. Colors are perfectly appropriate, especially at events, because they are fun, conversation starters and an opportunity for you to step outside of your normal work palette.
2. Being a little off-center is okay. Asymmetrical necklines are flattering for just about every body shape. Here it gives this basic draped, half-sleeve dress something extra to really make it event worthy. When looking to subtly empress always gravitate toward the details. A crewneck or cowl neck would be just as appropriate, but less interesting.A solid dark tie would have worked with this shirt, but the overall look would have been too heavy with the dark suit. A bold diagonal striped tie is the better choice. It grounds the shirt to the suit and makes the maroon color pop. Everyone will notice the shirt, but mention the tie, in a good way.3. On display. Functions are all about the display. From the decorations, catering, and lighting to the attendees everything is designed to impress. Why should the fact you are attending for business deprive you of that opportunity? It is perfectly appropriate to break out your bolder statement jewelry, if you keep it focused to one piece. These earrings are large, ornate and identifiable. For those reasons the bracelet is more delicate, understated and complimentary.Notice the watch face is simple and the strap dark leather. A metal watch is generally accepted, but not appropriate if you follow the classic rules of gentlemen dress. My philosophy is that it is always better to be complimented on the unassuming elegance of an item than for all of its bells and whistles.
