Bring Children’s Stories to Life during Annual Augusta Baker’s Dozen Celebration

March 20, 2019

Each spring, the worlds of storytelling and children’s literature fuse during Augusta Baker’s Dozen. Richland Library is celebrating 33 years of the annual storytelling event, and we’re welcoming award-winning illustrator R. Gregory Christie as the 2019 featured guest.

From April 4-6, there are two opportunities to meet and hear from Christie at our Main location (1431 Assembly Street):

6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Thursday, April 4, join us for an author discussion and book signing during the program, Meet the Illustrator: R. Gregory Christie.

10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., Saturday, April 6, bring the entire family and enjoy a morning of storytelling, theater performances and a presentation by Christie during
the program, A Celebration of Stories.

Both programs are free and open to the public.

Christie is the illustrator of more than 50 books for children, including Jazz Baby and Freedom in Congo Square. He has won both the Caldecott Honor and the Boston Globe – Horn Book Award, and he’s a six-time recipient of the Coretta Scott King Honor.

Customers are able to view a few pieces of Christie’s work as part of Our Voice: Celebrating the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Awards. The exhibit is on display at the library and the Columbia Museum of Art through April 26.

Augusta Baker’s Dozen honors the life and work of nationally-known librarian and storyteller Augusta Baker. She captured and conveyed the melody and power of the written word, establishing herself as America’s First Lady of traditional storytelling. Her inspiration has enabled generations of storytellers to introduce children to the magic of books and stories.
