Burnette, Shutt receive Columbia Lawyer of the Year honors

August 15, 2019

M. Malissa Burnette and Nekki Shutt are recognized as Columbia “Lawyers of the Year” in the just-released 2020 edition of Best Lawyers in America.

Burnette is honored in Employment Law – Individuals. It’s the third time she’s received that honor and her fifth overall “Lawyer of the Year” award. Shutt was selected in Litigation – ERISA. It’s the second time she’s received that award and her fourth consecutive Lawyer of the Year award.

“It’s always great to see your colleagues recognized,” said Kathleen McDaniel, the third founding partner of the firm. “It’s even more special when the honors are based on peer review and they come in practice areas that reflect the guiding principles of our firm. We’re dedicated to fighting to right wrongs, and Malissa’s and Nekki’s work in employment law and employee benefits is a big part of that.”

Overall, Burnette is highlighted in four practice areas in the new edition of Best Lawyers. Shutt is honored in six. Partner Janet Rhodes is included in two employment law categories.

Inclusion in Best Lawyers is based on peer review and independent research. A single “Lawyer of the Year” is chosen in each practice area in each city based on top marks in the peer evaluation.

A companion piece, Best Law Firms in America, is released in November. Burnette Shutt & McDaniel has earned Tier 1 rankings in that directory every year since the firm was founded.
