CarolinaPower’s Columbia office honored for challenging Combined Heat & Power (CHP) project for Shaw Industries
November 18, 2019CarolinaPower, a leading electrical contractor with four offices in South Carolina, has received a 2019 Excellence in Construction (EIC) Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas (ABC Carolinas) for the firm’s distinguished performance on a high-profile project for Shaw Industries, the world’s largest carpet manufacturer and a leading floor covering provider. The award-winning project entailed a cogeneration retrofit to accommodate the addition of a Combined Heat & Power (CHP) process at Shaw’s carpet fiber manufacturing facility in Columbia, S.C. Once completed, Shaw began realizing a significant increase in energy efficiency as well as reduced energy costs.
The nature of the project itself – merging two power sources (generator and utility) and their synchronization – was inherently complex. CarolinaPower is one of a select group of electrical contractors in the state of South Carolina with the Public Utility Electrical License needed for this type of work.
The project was of critical importance to Shaw Industries as it was the company’s first Combined Heat & Power (CHP) project and a prototype for implementing CHP processes at other Shaw locations. Further, the project was closely followed by government leaders and private interests due to the energy saving implications.
“Based on the performance of this very first CHP for Shaw, the same energy saving technology was going to be deployed at other Shaw facilities in the Southeast. Our reputation was on the line given that we work at multiple Shaw facilities in South Carolina and Georgia,” said CarolinaPower President Chris Moore.
CarolinaPower’s team from the Columbia office accepted the award at the ABC Carolinas Chapter’s 18th Annual EIC Awards Gala in Charlotte on November 7. 2019. The project took second place in the category Electrical Contracting ($1 million to $2 million).
