Cason Development Group continues Cottontown redevelopment

December 19, 2017

Cason Development Group’s revitalization of the Cottontown Commercial District is continuing with four additional buildings along Sumter Street.

Cason has acquired 2202 Sumter Street — the former Columbia offices of Loomis Armored US — as well as a cluster of three buildings at Sumter and Jefferson streets that housed Dave’s Transmission. The Dave’s site includes 2150, 2146 and 2144 Sumter Street. Cason also acquired a nearby parking lot.

Investment in the properties is expected to be more than $1 million.

Cason has identified a restaurant tenant for 2150 Sumter, a 1,000-square-foot building, and is seeking to find another restaurant for 2146 Sumter, a 4,000-square-foot building next door. The proposed restaurants will be connected by a common courtyard and outdoor dining area. The building at 2144 Sumter will be converted for an office user.

Cason expects to start construction on the redevelopment project after the first of the year.

The 6,000-square-foot Loomis building at 2202 Sumter is distinctive in that it includes a large bank vault. Loomis provided cash management services for Columbia area businesses. Cason is seeking a unique tenant for the building and believes it would be perfect for a brewery or distillery, but is open to other uses.

This will make eight properties along Franklin and Sumter streets that Cason Development Group has acquired and redeveloped.

“We continue to see tremendous upside in the rehabilitation of the Cottontown Commercial District,” said Frank Cason, president of Cason Development Group. “Cottontown provides an affordable and unique location for businesses that want to be in downtown Columbia.”

Columbia City Councilman Sam Davis said Cason “has impressed me as a developer who believes in the potential of the North Main corridor. His investments in the Cottontown Commercial District have resulted in creative reuse of existing commercial space that’s adding to the renaissance of the area.”

Work is continuing on the redevelopment of 2222 Sumter St. for Amsterdam Lumber Co., and Cason continues to seek an additional tenant for a 2,000-square foot space in the 12,000-square-foot building at 2238 Sumter St., which already houses Indah Coffee Co. and Circa Barber Shop.

“It’s obvious that Cason has a vision for each project and is conscious of the kind of amenities the people in the area want,” said Davis, whose council district includes Cottontown.

Cason Development Group also recently completed the redevelopment of the office building at 2244 Sumter St., the corner of Sumter and Franklin streets, for Columbia Presbyterian Church.

The redevelopment of 1209 Franklin St. for the War Mouth Restaurant almost 2 years ago was Cason Development Group’s first project in the Cottontown neighborhood.
