Cayce introduces newest K9 as Lexington Two students return to school

The Cayce Police Department is thrilled to announce the newest addition to their K9 team, Fletcher! Fletcher is a 19-month-old Labrador Retriever. Fletcher and his handler, Senior SRO/K9 Daniel Green, have completed basic handler training at Person-Borne Detection K9. Senior SRO/K9 Daniel Green, is certified by the International Police Work Dog Association (IPWDA.) He and Fletcher will be one of our K9 teams that work in the Lexington School District Two schools!

While Fletcher is specifically trained in traditional and person-borne firearm detection; our School Resource Officers state that Fletcher’s training is more of a deterrent and preventative measure than a direct response to a specific concern or need.

Senior SRO/K9 Green stated, “While there is not a concern of firearms being an issue; we know that our students and teachers love the presence of our K9s at our Cayce schools, and that K9s are proven to be a proactive safety measure in our schools!”

“When the Cayce Police Department approached the district about the idea of incorporating a K9 into the SRO program to detect firearms, we recognized it as another opportunity to enhance our school safety measures,” said Santana Sanguiliano, Lexington Two’s director of security and risk. “Fletcher, like Cayce’s other K9s, will be a valuable resource to foster communication between students and law enforcement, while educating them on the importance of ‘seeing something and saying something.’ We appreciate our ongoing law enforcement partnerships and the innovative ways we work together to ensure a safe learning environment.”

Fletcher and Senior SRO/K9 Green will continue trainings; but in the meantime, K9 Officer Fletcher is excited to be in the schools to meet new friends and serve as another layer to keep our students safe!
