CCSD hosts Teach Local signing day

Four Charleston County School District (CCSD) students participated in a “signing day” to celebrate their commitment to teach in the district when they graduate college in the near future.

These four students, Lillian Avery, Aaron Booth, Ivy Grinnage, and Tina Robinson, are all graduating seniors from Early College High School, and part of the CCSD’s Teach Local program, which provides high school students with training to become an educator and support to attend a college and earn a degree in education.

Membership in the Teach Local cohort affords students the ability to work with a caring, dedicated mentor in high school who is committed to providing diverse experiences that have many impacts, including forging a love for education.

Teach Local is a partnership that includes CCSD, Trident Technical College, and the College of Charleston (CofC). CCSD’s main responsibilities are to recruit students, provide instructors, offer field experiences, and offer teaching jobs to candidates once certified. Trident provides an advisor to assist students in navigating through an associate’s degree and tuition waivers. CofC begins offering appropriate college courses to Teach Local candidates while still in high school, assists with transfers from Trident, and provides an academic advisor while enrolled at CofC.

Avery has already graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Trident Technical College. While at Early College, she participated in the Teacher Cadet program with two weeks of field experience in a classroom. This helped guide her to enroll at the College of Charleston so she could earn her teaching degree.

Booth will also be attending the College of Charleston and work towards a degree in education. He aspires to be a history teacher as well as a mechanics instructor.

Grinnage will attend Winthrop University in the fall. Grinnage’s passions are writing and performing; she plans to major in Secondary Education with a focus on English.

Robinson also participated in the Teacher Cadet Program. Robinson will attend Francis Marion University, where she will major in Early Childhood Education.

We appreciate the support of our partners, Trident Tech and the College of Charleston, and their willingness to help these students grow into local educators.”
