Celebrating 20 successful seasons at the Newberry Opera House

August 2, 2017

The wait is over, friends.  Your Newberry Opera House is excited and proud to announce our 20th season!  Our success could not have been possible without your support throughout the years, our goal is to go above and beyond and exceed your expectations.  This season we have striving to remember our past and honor our future with quality programming, new enhanced experiences, and a fresh look at the season brochure and website.

We have a motto at the Opera House: “Think beyond the Tower.”  We ask ourselves to think about the impact that we have had on the city of Newberry, the county and our region throughout the 20 years that the Newberry Opera House has been active. This ‘out of the box’ thinking relates to everything we do.  We encourage you as an audience member to challenge yourself to pick a new seat, to see a show you maybe would not think to see normally, and to ask your neighbor you may not know so well to go out for dinner and a show!  Take a chance, try something new, invest in a once of a kind experience!

For our 20th season we will be using a special limited time logo, you will see that it is the chandelier that hangs in the theatre.  It symbolizes all the shows, plays and performances that have come through the Opera House.  It symbolizes all of the local, national and international friends who have travelled here.  Finally, it symbolizes community; just like the Opera House it has been through it all and will continue to be here for many years to come.

This season has a little bit of everything for everyone:  National and internationally known performances are coming to the Newberry Opera House and we are lucky to have the opportunity to see them in such a beautiful, intimate venue with experiences so personal you will not get them anywhere else.  From Comedian Henry Cho to Pianist Michelle Cann; there will be something the whole family will enjoy!

Kicking off the season, Saliva is a multi-platinum and Grammy nominated hard rock group.  Who has toured with major names like KISS and Aerosmith.  The band is currently working on their latest album, which you might be lucky enough to hear some of their new songs.  This show will have everyone on their feet while jamming out to their classic songs like “Click Click Boom” and “Ladies and Gentlemen.”  This show is the first of its kind for the Opera House- so expect people to stand.

Sister Hazel has been a well-known, southern band who is constantly moving up the music charts with their hit songs like “All For You” and “Your Winter”, which are written by band members.  Sister Hazel has something for all music tastes, the band has always been “unclassifiable” according to band member Jett Beres, bassist.  This will not be a show to miss!

Be on the lookout for our Enhanced Experiences listed throughout the brochure.  While these are not new to the Opera House, they have been refreshed.  You can find these and many more Enhanced Experiences listed under the date and ticket prices in the brochure.  With different shows there are additional activities.  For example, before the play “Fancy Nancy,” your child can join us in PJ’s for milk and cookies. There are also light receptions before all of our fine arts performances.  These experiences are included in the ticket price or otherwise stated in the brochure and website.

Holiday shows are a must see this year as we welcome Internationally renowned Pulitzer and Grammy® winning artist Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with special guests to the Newberry Opera House stage for the first time. Joining them this holiday season is Carol of the King, led by former Lord of the Dance, dancer Justin Boros, multi-platinum selling The TEN Tenors, and the follow up to the sold out show from last season, Sierra Hull’s Christmas Edition. R&B meets Christmas classics with shows from The Embers, The Jive Aces, and The Golden Sounds of the Platters. Then finish the year off in style with our one of a kind NYE in NBY party featuring the Swingin’ Medallions.

There are plenty of events and enhanced experiences for the family this year.  The Christmas Classic, The Nutcracker, returns this winter but with a twist.  Bring your ballerina to tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy before the show!  You will not want to miss the chance to see the gigantic smile on their face when they get to meet the one and only Sugar Plum Fairy.  Tea will be provided by the Silverspoon & Olwen McKenna’s Tea Rooms of Downtown Newberry.  Lightwire Theatre, as seen on America’s Got Talent, will be returning this season with two shows, Moon Mouse and DINO Light.  These shows will be sure to amaze any child and leave them wanting more.  Check out these and other shows we have for you and your children in the Family Adventure Series.

Everyone knows the song, “It’s A Great Day to Be Alive,” and you have the chance to hear it live!  Travis Tritt spent most of his career writing songs until he decided it was his turn for the big stage.  He has worked with big names such as Garth Brooks and Allen Jackson.  His country sound is influenced by rock and creates a vibe that you cannot turn off.

This is just the tip of the iceberg folks, favorites like The Oak Ridge Boys and Edwin McCain will also be coming back to Newberry.  Can’t decide which show you want to see?  Features like Make Your Own Series make it easy for you to pick out your favorite shows and create your own discounted package.  We have included even more shows this year to make sure that your series is the best yet.  But do not forget to check out our genre series like Tributes, Broadway & Theatre and Bluegrass, with at least four performances in each, these packages will be in high demand.
