20th Annual Race for Life Inspires Hope, Uniting the South Carolina Community
We Are Sharing Hope SC (SHSC), South Carolina’s federally designated Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), celebrated its 20th Annual Race for Life on March 29, 2025.
The organization’s largest event and fundraiser was held on Folly Beach and brought together 579 participants, bringing awareness to the donation mission and celebrating the gift of life. Community members, transplant recipients, donor families and supporters walked and ran side by side to honor legacies and promote organ, eye and tissue donation and the impact it has on so many.
“For two decades, Race for Life has united our community in a powerful way, honoring donor heroes, celebrating transplant recipients and inspiring hope for those still waiting,” said Krystal Cau, Director of Communications at We Are Sharing Hope SC. “This year’s race is a testament to the generosity of South Carolinians and the life-saving power of organ, eye, and tissue donation.”
This year’s race saw remarkable participation, with 579 runners crossing the finish line. Additionally, for those unable to attend in person, the Hero at Home virtual option enabled 91 supporters from across the state to join in spirit and show their support of the donation mission.
“We race every year to honor my son who gave the gift of life and saved five lives,” shared donor mom Fay Bowden. “It means so much to see generations of my family gather here to honor my son, Drew.”
The race is the largest fundraising event of the year for SHSC. Funds raised from the event support SHSC’s initiatives across the state to develop educational programs and raise awareness about the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation. In doing this, SHSC ensures South Carolinians are equipped to make informed decisions when becoming registered donors.
