CHA awarded HUD’s ROSS Service Coordinator grant

February 27, 2018

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced that Columbia Housing Authority (CHA) has been awarded a Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) Service Coordinator grant totaling $384,255. The CHA will use the grant funds to pay the salary of two Supportive Services Coordinators for the next three years.

“We are excited to receive this grant,” said Gilbert Walker, Executive Director of the CHA. “The CHA is dedicated to more than just affordable housing. We want our residents to have the opportunity to better themselves through programs that our Case Managers work so hard to create.”

The ROSS Service Coordinator grant was created to provide funding to hire and maintain Service Coordinators who evaluate the needs of those who live in conventional public housing and provide case management services. The Coordinators are responsible for assessing the needs of residents, coordinating resources and engaging them in supportive services activities. They assist residents in empowering themselves, eliminating barriers, increasing earned income, reducing the need for government assistance, and obtaining economic and housing self-sufficiency. They also bring resources and opportunities to the residents of the public housing developments by creating partnerships with public and private institutions.

CHA is the largest housing authority in South Carolina and is recognized as one of the best housing authorities in the nation. CHA manages about 2,000 conventional public housing units and administers almost 4,000 rental assistance contracts throughout Richland County. CHA is continuously recognized by HUD for its successful housing, education, and resident programs.
