CHA to host Father’s Day event and kick off the Summer Food Service Program
June 5, 2018The Columbia Housing Authority is hosting a Father’s Day Event and partnering with the Department of Education to kick off the 2018 Summer Food Service Program on Saturday, June 9 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. outside at the Drew Wellness Center (2101 Walker Solomon Way).
The Father’s Day Event was created to present the opportunity for fathers to engage with their families and to focus on the health and well-being of themselves and their children. The event will be filled with family fun, food, games, music and prizes.
Executive Director, Gilbert Walker, commented on the event saying, “this Father’s Day Event is extremely important to us at the CHA. A lot of our kids in our housing communities do not have any interaction with their fathers and we really want to encourage fathers to become more active in their children’s lives.”
The CHA and the South Carolina Department of Education will also kick off the 2018 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The SFSP provides free meals to school-aged children, 18 years old or younger living in area-eligible locations. The CHA will serve as one of the only four housing authority sponsors in S.C and will beginning serving meals on June 11.
“We saw the Father’s Day Event as the perfect opportunity to educate our residents on the Summer Food Service Program,” explains Mr. Walker. “We are excited to bring this Program into our communities and to be able to provide nutritious meals to children until school is back in session.”
