May 30, 2011

CHARLESTON, SC – May 27, 2011 – The Citadel on Wednesday, May 25, was honored by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce with its 1773 Chamber Award.

The 1773 Awards is named for the year of the chamber’s establishment. The award recognizes organizations that best reflect the core values of the chamber: leadership, relevance, integrity, diversity and innovation. This is the fourth year for the award. Including The Citadel, 11 dynamic businesses and industries that make up the Charleston region’s economy and best reflect the chamber’s vision, mission and core values were announced at the chamber’s annual meeting.

In recognizing The Citadel in the Public/Non-Profit category, the chamber lauded The Citadel’s educational role as well as its contributions to society both through its graduates from the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and the Graduate College.

“Through three different centuries, The Citadel’s contribution of leaders to society has been greatly disproportionate to its size. The Citadel has established itself as one of the leading undergraduate liberal arts colleges in the Southeast. Citadel cadets and graduates have continued to serve our nation bravely and to stand as a bulwark of duty, honor, god and country, dedicated to producing principled leaders for service to the state of South Carolina, and our nation.”

The Citadel’s application for the 1773 Award points to the pride the college has in its educational mission and in providing leaders for public service and private enterprise. A key mission is to support K-12 education in the Lowcountry through its literacy and counselor education programs as well as the new STEM Center of Excellence to improve science, technology, engineering and math education.

“We’re honored to receive the Chamber’s 1773 Award,” said Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. “The 1773 Award recognizes The Citadel’s dedication to principled leadership and commitment to our community.”

Winners of each category will vie for the 1773 Chamber of the Year Award, which will be presented at the chamber’s Annual Gala June 24, 2011.
