Charleston City Council Ratifies Emergency Ordinance

CHARLESTON, SC — Charleston City Council held a special meeting at City Hall at 5:30 p.m. on June 23, 2015 to ratify an emergency ordinance to prohibit picketing and other protests activities within 300 feet of any residence, cemetery, funeral home, church, synagogue or other establishment during or within one (1) hour before or one (1) after the conducting of a funeral, memorial or burial service at that location. It applies to picketers or protesters for or against any matter.

The City of Charleston ordinance as set forth in Section 2-23(d) of the Code of the City of Charleston requires a 2/3 vote to enact an emergency ordinance. City Council voted unanimously to enact this Emergency Ordinance. The Emergency Ordinance went into effect immediately upon its enactment and will expire automatically on the 61st day following the date of its enactment.
