Charleston County Coroner’s Office becomes the only one in the state to earn National Association of Medical Examiners accreditation
February 26, 2026The Charleston County Coroner’s Office announce that it has been fully accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME), affirming that its operating policies, procedures, and practices are aligned with the national standard guidelines.
Charleston County Coroner’s Office is the only Coroner’s Office in the state to achieve this milestone and one of just a handful of Coroner or Medical Examiner’s Offices nationwide to be dually accredited by both NAME and the International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners (IACME). The Coroner’s Office was reaccredited by NAME in December 2025 and by IACME in October 2025.
In NAME’s accreditation notification addressed to Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal, Inspection and Accreditation Committee Barbara Wolf, M.D. wrote in part, “The citizens [of Charleston County] can be proud of the hard work, dedication, and leadership made by you and your staff in attaining this accreditation…Congratulations on this honor and thank you for your continued support of one of the best offices in the country.”
The NAME accreditation process consists of a rigorous inspection of the physical facility and review of office practices, including the implementation of policies and procedures. The overall objective of the accreditation is to ensure that the application of the standards set forth by NAME will aid in developing and maintaining a high level of service in the medicolegal death investigation system for the communities in the jurisdiction in which they operate.
“I am incredibly proud of our team and the care, professionalism, and discipline they bring to this work each day in service to Charleston County,” said Coroner O’Neal. “Earning full accreditation from both NAME and IACME in the same year reflects their unwavering commitment to this work, to the people they serve, and to holding themselves to the highest professional standards.”
This accreditation from NAME went into effect December 20, 2025, and will continue to December 20, 2029, when accreditation verification will be required.
