Charleston County to hold pre-construction community meeting for Fort Johnson Road intersection improvement projects

October 30, 2025

The Fort Johnson Road Intersection Improvement Project team will hold a community meeting on Monday, November 3, 2025, from 6 to 7 p.m. at James Island Town Hall, located at 1122 Dills Bluff Road.

During the meeting, county Public Works officials will discuss project goals, including anticipated phasing, timeline, and construction expectations. Following the presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to speak directly with the project team.

Funded by the 2016 Transportation Sales Tax referendum, the projects are designed to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

The Fort Johnson Road at Secessionville Road intersection will be upgraded to a signalized intersection with crosswalks, pedestrian refuge areas, pedestrian signals, and dedicated turn lanes to streamline traffic and improve safety.

The Fort Johnson Road at Camp Road intersection will be reconfigured into a traversable urban compact roundabout, which is designed to safely and efficiently manage mixed traffic types. The project also includes enhanced pedestrian infrastructure, including sidewalks, ramps, crosswalks, refuge areas, and more.

County Council awarded the project contract to Banks Construction Company, Inc. in the amount of $11,711,237.65 at their August 26, 2025, meeting.

Pre-construction activities have begun, and construction is expected to continue until June 2027.
