Charleston launches Basin Flood Action Program to address immediate flooding concerns

Mayor William Cogswell unveiled the city’s new Basin Flood Action Program (BFAP) following a public workshop about the Charleston Integrated Water Plan with city council. BFAP marks a decisive step in addressing Charleston’s most pressing flooding issues with immediate, actionable projects designed to provide relief now.

Developed through extensive collaboration and detailed analysis across multiple city departments, the program focuses on 18 distinct basins within Charleston, each with targeted projects aimed at mitigating flooding, restoring ecological balance, and enhancing public access to water and nature.

“Our top priority is to address the urgent flooding issues that our residents face today,” said Mayor Cogswell. “The BFAP is designed to provide immediate relief with specific, actionable projects. While the Charleston Integrated Water Plan (CIWP) outlines our long-term vision for adapting to future challenges, the BFAP focuses on solving current problems and improving conditions in the near term.”

While the CIWP outlines aspirational concepts for future adaptation, the BFAP delivers concrete actions and solutions for today. The interactive maps and detailed plans provided by the BFAP will soon be available through the city’s GIS system, making it easier for residents to see how these projects will address specific local issues.

Residents are encouraged to engage with the BFAP by locating their basin using the provided maps, reviewing the planned actions for their areas, and participating in upcoming community meetings. Your feedback and collaboration are crucial as the city implements these strategies.
