Charleston Operation Move-Out 2015

July 29, 2015

CHARLESTON, SC – A large number of leases for rental properties in downtown Charleston end during the last few days of July. In the past, this has resulted in a build-up of discarded household goods on the City sidewalks and streets, as renters and college students move out.

To better manage the removal of the trash from the public right of way, the City of Charleston and College of Charleston established “Operation Move-Out.”

The area of the peninsula most affected by the end of July move-out has been divided into three zones: Zone One- Area from Line Street to Cannon Street, Zone Two- Area from Cannon Street to Calhoun Street and Zone Three- Area from Calhoun Street to Beaufain Street.

Livability Division code enforcement officers will conduct patrols in the zones to identify locations where trash is being put out improperly.  The code enforcement officers will provide an informational flier to tenants describing proper methods for discarding their household items. The flier will also inform tenants of alternative methods of discarding their household items, e.g. by donating gently used items to a charity such as Good Will Industries.

Operation Move-Out will begin on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. Tenants can deposit items at the curb by 7:00 a.m. thru Saturday, August 1st.  Also, tenants can deposit items at the curb after 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 2nd for Monday collection.

There will be thirty volunteers from Keep Charleston Beautiful to help the cleanup effort to remove loose litter at cleanup site.

At 8:00 a.m. each day, the team leader along with code enforcement officers will begin patrolling their zone. The Environmental Services division will pick up trash at the locations identified by the code enforcement officers until 5:00 p.m.
