December 3, 2024

In its Annual Wage & Job Growth Survey, Charleston Digital reports that the per-capita wage at companies participating in the 2024 survey is $120,142. This figure is more than double the most recent regional and state per-capita wage numbers. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2023), the average wage in South Carolina is $54,250, while the Charleston/North Charleston region averages $58,830.

Charleston Digital has conducted its annual wage and job growth survey among its members since 2003. Key insights from the 2024 survey include:

  • 50% of companies reported adding jobs in 2024.
  • 71% anticipate continuing to hire in 2025.
  • Over 50% of tech employees are remote workers.
  • 93% expect their remote workforce to increase or remain steady in 2025.

Among the companies adding jobs, Ignite Digital Services stands out, having added over 70 employees in 2024 with plans for further expansion in 2025. Several other participating companies raised significant funds during the year and plan to use the new capital to support product development and market expansion through additional hiring.

“The continued growth of tech sector wages in Charleston is undeniably strong, but it’s important to remember that it’s not just about technology jobs,” said Marc Murphy, Chief Executive of Ignite Digital. “This expansion creates ripple effects, driving demand for supporting roles in HR, marketing, and facilities management. Together, these jobs contribute to an overall healthy and diverse job market that benefits the entire Charleston community.”

Currently, tech employment comprises 12.1% of Charleston’s regional economy and has grown at an annual rate of 3.2% over the past decade, compared to the national growth rate of 2.1%.
