CHE appoints Interim President and Executive Director

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE) announced that Mr. Michael LeFever will serve as Interim President and Executive Director beginning the first week of January. On December 6, 2018, the Commission on Higher Education voted to form a search committee with the authority to hire for the Interim position. The Search Committee, consisting of Commission Chairman Wes Hayes and the chairs of the standing committees of the Commission, met twice and voted to hire Mr. LeFever at its meeting on December 28, 2018.

Regarding this decision, Chairman Hayes remarked: “Mike has the administrative experience and knowledge of higher education needed to keep the Commission moving forward.  Over the years, he has earned the respect of the Legislature and the education community and I look forward to working with him in tackling important education issues facing our state.”

For over ten years, Mr. LeFever served as President and CEO of South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities. Prior to that, LeFever was a principal in MG&C Consulting Services, LLC. He has served as the director of four different state agencies including thirteen years as the executive director of the Workers’ Compensation Commission and as Deputy Chief of Staff for Executive Office Programs and Cabinet Affairs in the administration of Governor Jim Hodges. A cum laude graduate of Presbyterian College (Clinton, SC), Mr. LeFever also holds a masters degree in public administration from the University of South Carolina.

The Commission appreciates Mr. LeFever’s willingness to assume this new role, and will begin the search for a permanent Director in the coming months.
