Chief Medical Officer joins PC’s new PA Studies program

February 20, 2018

Dr. Gregory Mappin has served as Self Regional Healthcare’s chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs for the last 12 years and as a thoracic surgeon for the last 25 years. On August 1, Mappin will join the Presbyterian College physician assistant studies program as its full-time medical director.

“The whole concept of a school in this area that works with Self Regional and surrounding entities makes perfect sense,” Mappin said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I could not turn down.”

Mappin will serve as a professor in the program in addition to serving as the medical director. The Greenwood resident has been working with physician assistants for most of his career. In fact, he recruited the first PA to Self Regional.

Mappin looks forward to training future PA’s.

“Training people entering the medical profession is an opportunity,” he said. “I hoped I’ve learned a few things in the few decades I’ve been doing this. To me it’s a matter of serving the students, the College, and ultimately the communities we live in. Not only is this a chance to provide service, it will be a new challenge for me.”

Mappin earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Duke University in 1976 and 1979, respectively. He served as a thoracic surgeon with the US Air Force from 1985 to 1993. From 1993 to 2006, Mappin served as a surgeon in a private practice in Greenwood, SC. Mappin has been chief medical officer at Self Regional Healthcare since 2006.

“For the past 25 years he has provided the highest level of compassionate and skilled care available anywhere to many members in our community,” said James A. Pfeiffer, president and CEO of Self Regional Healthcare. “Under his medical and administrative leadership, Self Regional Healthcare has grown to be the regional provider we all know today and many of our most successful programs and initiatives have been supported and / or led by Dr. Mappin.”

Welcoming Mappin to the new PA studies program at PC is a major advantage for the program’s future students, according to Dr. Joe Weber, PC’s PA studies program director.

“Dr Mappin is a tremendous blessing for PC,” Weber said. “With the major expansion of health professions degree offerings at PC, Dr. Mappin will be both a vital component of educating our PA students, as well as provide insight into the other programs we currently have under development.  We will all learn a great deal from Dr. Mappin and I’m thrilled to have him on the faculty.”
