Citizens gather to talk about bad roads

GREENVILLE, SC – Greenville residents gathered today at the intersection of Woodruff and Miller roads to learn more about one of the biggest projects up for a vote in the November referendum.

This intersection, which is one of the most gridlocked in all of Greenville, is the site of two separate redevelopments, said Dennis Raines, Mauldin’s mayor. One project will transform the intersection itself, while the second has it as the terminus of a five-lane parkway that would serve as an alternate route between Miller Road and Verdae Boulevard.

“The roads referendum is one of the most important votes in Greenville history,” Raines said. “This intersection underscores the need for people to pass this referendum.”

The Citizens for a Better Greenville held the walking tour of the intersection to better help voters understand the need for improved roads in Greenville County. About 35 people attended the tour, which is the first of four scheduled for the summer. Future tours will look at sidewalk plans at school, bridge improvements and resurfacing projects.

“We want the people of Greenville to be able to learn more about why Greenville’s infrastructure needs repairs,” Raines said.

The new parkway would serve as an alternate route between the Golden Strip the region’s busiest shopping district.  The proposed route runs for a mile and a half between Miller Road and Verdae Boulevard.

Along the way, it would cross Interstate 85 and connect with three roads that branch off Woodruff Road and are dead ends now — Ketron Court near Costco, Green Heron Road at the Nutra Manufacturing plant, and Woodruff Industrial Lane at TGI Friday’s.

Planners have said it would give drivers a way to access popular destinations on the busy road without driving it as much.  They also say it would cut Woodruff Road traffic by 25 percent over time.
