The City Manager’s Spotlight provides details about what is happening in the City of Columbia in an effort to keep citizens informed about City operations. The City Manager’s Spotlight on December 2017 reflects important initiatives that will highlight major projects in the City of Columbia as well as events and upcoming meetings. Columbia Animal Services Closed Dec. 2Â Due to Technology Maintenance
The Columbia Animal Shelter will be closed on Saturday, December 2. The shelter is having upgrades done to their computer and phone systems. Due to this project, there will be no access to phones or computers which will impact all operations.
If you have an emergency you can call the City’s Customer Care Center at 803-545-3300.

The City of Columbia’s Community Development Department will host a two-part Homebuyer Workshop on Tuesday, December 5 and Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at the Richland County Library Assembly branch, located at 1431 Assembly St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Both workshops are 2 hour sessions and the topics for discuss will be the home buying process, money management, understanding credit and getting a mortgage loan.
During the second session a certificate will be given to each participant for completing both sessions and a drawing will be held for a participant to win an Amazon Fire Tablet. Light refreshments will be served.
The workshops are free and open to the public, but registration is required.

The City of Columbia, Richland School District One and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Foundation have kicked off the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Honor the Dream Food Drive benefiting Harvest Hope Food Bank. The food drive ends December 8, 2017.
The food drive is held each year to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of community service. Some requested items include canned fruit and vegetables, dry goods and canned meats.
The public can drop off donations at the following locations:

The City of Columbia is accepting nominations for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Keeper Scholarship Awards.
The Dream Keeper Award recognizes exemplary displays of committed service to the tenets of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The ideals of social responsibility, political empowerment, diversity, racial harmony, nonviolence, and unselfish service must be demonstrated voluntarily by the nominee in support of his or her community and fellow citizens.
The nominee must be age 18 or younger and enrolled in school with a minimum 2.0 grade point average.
Winners will be announced at the City of Columbia’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 15, 2018, at 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and Community Center, 2300 Greene Street. Nominees must attend the celebration.
