City of Cayce Expresses Gratitude to SCANA for Historic Land Donation

CAYCE, SC – The City of Cayce would like to extend its gratitude to SCANA Corporation for their donation of over 360 acres of land for a history park and recreation area. The land, located on the 12^th Street Extension near the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center, shows evidence of occupation by Native Americans that dates back over 12,000 years. It includes structures such as a pre-revolutionary garrison, Civil War earthworks and a battlefield site. The City is working with the National Park Service, South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and other partners to create a park and recreational area that will showcase the 12,000 years of inhabitants on this property.

The City of Cayce plans to preserve the land and make it accessible to the public for recreation by extending the existing Cayce River Walk. With all these exciting developments taking place, the City has planned to publically recognize the land donation at the Grand Opening of the Cayce Riverwalk Phase IV on January 9, 2015 at 2:00 PM. Phase IV, the final phase of the Riverwalk, will be called the “Battlefield Connection” in remembrance of its’ historical role. Phase IV will connect the Cayce Riverwalk to the Timmerman Trail. The Timmerman Trail runs 3.5 miles through the donated land and includes an eight-foot wide concrete path with boardwalks that will loop throughout the 360 acres.

This SCANA donation also includes four acres suitable for construction, with plans for a visitor and interpretive center currently being put into place.

Cayce Mayor Elise Partin stated, “Land with this level of archaeological and historical significance is rare and SCANA should be commended for the preservation and donation of this land to become public for all to learn from and enjoy.  The archaeological and historical significance is only surpassed by the beauty of the trail and the recreational benefit.  We are thankful to SCANA for their corporate partnership and for sharing this land that tells the story of our City, county, state and nation.”
