City of Cayce moves forward with City Arts District

October 25, 2019

At a September City Council Meeting, Cayce City Council gave second reading to an ordinance that would create the Cayce Arts Design Overlay District on State and Frink Streets.

The adoption of the Overlay District builds upon previous actions taken to develop Cayce’s Arts District and to support its robust artist community. Specifically, the City has been actively engaged in revitalizing State Street, specifically through their “previtalization” efforts. The “previtalization” process, appropriately described as “the art of what’s possible,” has already led to the redevelopment of several underutilized properties to becoming new and thriving businesses such as Piecewise Coffee, Swatch Graphics and the State of the Art of State Gallery.

In addition, citizens in Cayce have formed an active artist group of more than 60 citizens and business leaders called the Cayce Artists Guild. They have organized and actively promoted new opportunities in a variety of mediums for artists and creatives in Cayce. The Cayce Public Safety Foundation is requesting proposals from artists to design and create a K-9 memorial sculpture for the City of Cayce’s Art Lot, located at 1908 State Street. Last month, the City issued a Call for Artists for two other projects for the City’s Art Lot.

Previtalization and revitalization of State Street and the surrounding area is an important component of the Cayce Arts District because it is Cayce’s historical “Main Street.” It is also at a trailhead for the Cayce Riverwalk and already the location of a distillery, brewery and restaurant. Further, Cayce’s leaders look forward to the Arts District fostering artist entrepreneurship and economic development.  To find out more about new opportunities in the Cayce Arts Overlay District, please visit our website at caycesc.gov.
